
Bay League action got under way this week for the fall season, highlighted by Redondo’s girls volleyball team that is riding a 13-game winning streak and is ranked second in the state and third in the nation in the MaxPreps Freeman rankings. The team’s last loss came during the Durango Fall Classic when the Sea Hawks fell to tournament champion Torrey Pines, the top-ranked team in the nation.
Girls Volleyball
Redondo continues to prove it deserves the No. 1 ranking in the CIF Southern Section Division 1-AA poll, defeating No. 4 Marymount in a non-league home match on Monday.
Skylar Dykstra recorded 14 kills and 23 digs in the Sea Hawk’s 25-17, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22 victory.
Marissa Mitter added 12 kills, Brianna Lanktree had 11 kills and six digs, Hannah Mosebar posted five kills and four blocks and Abril Bustamante had four kills.
Redondo (18-3, 1-0) opened Bay League action Tuesday with a 25-20, 25-17, 28-26 win at Peninsula. Dykstra recorded 16 kills and 18 digs, Lanktree added 11 kills and Mitter and Mosebar had eight kills each.
The Sea Hawks continue league action Thursday with a 6 p.m. match against Palos Verdes. Redondo hosts West Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. before its rivalry match at home against defending Bay League champion Mira Costa on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
In an unusual position, Mira Costa is looking to climb back into the Division 1-AA top ten and a huge win on Wednesday may have helped the Mustang’s cause.
Mira Costa rebounded from an opening set loss to defeat Laguna Beach, the top-ranked team in Division 1-A, 17-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-17, 15-12 in a non-league match.
Lexi Millington recorded 14 digs, 22 digs and five aces to lead the Mustangs. Gracye Campbell added 13 kills and seven digs, Kelsey McIntire had six kills and five blocks, Brooke Feld posted 19 digs and two aces and Jerephina Leilua contributed six kills.
The Mustangs opened Bay League action with a 25-11, 25-15, 24-26, 25-18 win at Palos Verdes.
Campbell led Mira Costa with nine kills and two blocks, Adrian Anderson added seven kills and four blocks and Millington had six kills, two blocks and two aces.
Mira Costa continues league play Thursday with a 4:15 p.m. match at West and hosts Peninsula Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. before next week’s showdown at Redondo.
Boys Water Polo
Mira Costa plays three road games this week against top ten teams in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 poll.
The sixth-ranked Mustangs opened Bay League action with a 9-8 victory at third-ranked Palos Verdes in a key Bay League contest.
Sam Siltanen led Mira Costa with three goals and Cody Kelley and Drew Rogerson scored two apiece to help put the Mustangs in the driver’s seat for the league title.
Jimmy Bissell had four assists and goalkeeper Ian Zaun recorded nine saves in the physical contest that finished with neither team scoring in the final four minutes.
Mira Costa improved its record to 3-4 while Palos Verdes fell to 8-2 on the season.
Mira Costa continues its grueling schedule at Montebello (No. 4, Div. 3) Thursday and at La Canada (No. 1, Div. 3) at 5 p.m. on Saturday. The Mustangs return to league play with a home game against West on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Redondo (9-3) is enjoying its best season in many years. The Sea Hawks beat host Culver City 12-4 in a non-league game Tuesday. Lucas Duffy scored four goals; Jonathan Ortiz added three goals and goalie Xcevio Zuluago recorded 10 saves for the Sea Hawks.
Redondo will host Peninsula (No. 10, Div. 3) in a 3 p.m. game on Thursday before playing at Palos Verdes Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Girls Tennis
In a showdown between unbeaten teams, Mira Costa fell to visiting Peninsula 12-6. The Panthers are ranked No. 4 in CIF Division 1 and improved their overall record to 10-0 and 3-0 in the Bay League. Mira Costa fell to 9-1 on the season and 2-1 in league play.
The Mustangs play at rival Redondo on Thursday.
Redondo (9-2, 1-2) defeated West 15-3 in a Bay League meeting on Tuesday. Alyssa Grijalva swept three singles and the doubles teams of Erin Shy-Emily Zargham, Miin-Jiuan Tsay-Lia Quilty and Sierra Foshe-Sarah Antilla swept their sets.
On Monday, Redondo beat North 16-2 in a non-league contest with Grijalva and Audrey Lai sweeping their singles matches. Doubles teams of Foshe/Antilla, Shy/Zargahm and Tsay/Quilty each won two sets.
The Sea Hawks host Mira Costa Thursday, Torrance on Monday, Chadwick on Wednesday and Peninsula on Thursday, Oct. 11.
