I love surfing alone or with people. But one of my favorite things is surfing with people who love surfing.
Master sled shaper Jose Barahona graciously picked me up at 6:30 and we sailed down to Blackies in Newport beach, a wave I can only describe as a beachbreak on steroids. Even when its a bit bigger, the wave is playful and not too intimidating, with a very short paddle past the breakers and soft lines that peak up everywhere, giving everyone a chance to catch as many waves as they want.
Jose and I paddled out to meet Kris Hall and to our surprised bumped into surf coach Mike Siordia, and our little South Bay surf club rode the playful waves of Blackies, and the joy on everyone’s faces suggesting that they indeed were loving every second of surf, sun, company, and bobbing around in the ocean.
