Tim “Fergie” Ferguson’s family and over 100 of his friends gathered for a paddleout in memory of the Manhattan Beach native Saturday morning at Marine Street, where he once “controlled the left,” noted longtime neighbor Mike Murphy.
The conditions evoked memories of perfect beach days. The waves were peaky and head-high. Guitarist Todd Robinson and keyboard player Mark McMillen, both also longtime neighbors of Fergie, played the songs Fergie and his friends grew up with.

Jim Light’s trawler Grey Ghost waited outside the break with Fergie’s ashes. He passed away in January, at age 51, of complications relating to Parkinson’s disease.
Fergie played volleyball on Mira Costa High’s and El Camino College’s championship teams and was a competitive surfer and accomplished waterman. Lifelong friend Steve Fisher said Fergie’s favorite time of the year was the International Surf Festival, in August, when he would compete in the pier to pier swim, the pier to pier paddleboard race and the surfing and bodysurfing contests.
