Nearly 200 paddlers competed in the Velzy Stevens Paddleboard Championships Sunday morning, during the International Surf Festival. The 1.5 mile race starts in the water at the end of the Manhattan Beach pier and finishes on the south side of the Hermosa Beach pier.

Max First, winner of last year’s Catalina Classic,  paddling an unlimited prone board, had the overall fastest time. He finished in 16:24, more than a minute ahead of second place finisher Mark Miyamoto, who finished in 17:39 to win the stand-up division.  Rodney Ellis won the prone 14-foot division and was fifth overall in 18:09. Kobe Sallsbrom won the stock prone division and was sixth overall, in 18:46

Paddlers with the top combined times in the previous day’s eight mile Riviera Mexican Around the R10 Paddleboard Race and the Velzy Stevens race received special recognition awards. First had the top combined scores in the unlimited division, DJ O’Brien in the women’s division, Rodney Ellis in the 14-foot division and Kobe Sallstrom in the stock division.

The race was organized by the South Bay Boardriders Club. ER
