Overcoming turnovers puts extra pressure on any football team, but when they occur against a powerhouse team, it makes a victory highly unlikely.

Mira Costa suffered five turnovers that led to 21 second-half points in a 49-29 loss to Loyola Friday at a game played at L.A. Valley College.

The Mustangs could not capitalize on a 291-yard rushing performance by Sebastian Franck-Love who carried the ball 27 times. The senior scored his lone touchdown on a 75-yard run on the second play of the game and also broke off runs of 62 and 53 yards.

Mira Costa wide receiver Harrison Morrow continued to have a stellar senior season gaining 95 yards on seven catches including one touchdown on a toss from quarterback Greg Briskin.

Coach Don Morrow’s Mustangs (2-2) have their fourth road game of the season Friday when they travel to face Newport Beach at 7 p.m. Mira Costa defeated Newport Beach 26-14 at home last year.

Newport Harbor (2-2) evened its record with a 34-13 win at San Clemente Friday and is ranked No. 10 in the CIf Southern Section Southwest Division.

The Sailors opened the season with a 35-20 loss at Trabuco Hills (No. 11, Southern Div.), edge the Northern Division’s seventh-ranked team Palos Verdes 34-33 and suffered a 34-14 loss to Corona del Mar, the top ranked team in the Southern Division.

Junior quarterback Cole Norris (6-1, 190) leads the Sailors offense and has two talented receivers in Quest Truxton (6-0, 160) and Cory Stowell (6-1, 180).

Stowell led the Sunset League last season with 762 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Newport Harbor’s running game features juniors Chance Siemonsma (6-0, 165) and Riley Gaddis (6-1, 205).

Senior Ramsey Hufford (6-4, 300) anchors the line on both sides of the ball.
