Grandview Elementary School was one of four California schools nominated for the new federal Green Ribbon Schools Award program, created to recognize schools that save energy, reduce costs, feature environmentally sustainable learning spaces and offer environmental education to boost academic achievement and community engagement.
More than 50 schools applied from California. Among its many environmental accomplishments, Grandview has reduced lunch trash from thirty bags per day to two, implemented recycling and composting programs, implemented the walking school bus program and planted on-campus gardens.
A federal selection committee will review the nominees and choose fifty schools nationwide next month to receive the award.
