A Jilk Heavy Construction worker goes to use a pole to retrieve a piece of wood Monday from the Redondo Beach Sportfishing Pier.

Demolition of the 1960s structure is set for completion by May, in time for the BeachLife Music Festival, starting May 5. Jilk, the contractor, started by strengthening the pier’s pilings so they can support a crane needed for the work.

“(The project) is going according to plan,” said Andy Winje, city engineer.

The King Harbor waterfront amenities plan calls for building a replacement “Sportfishing Pier” — with a restaurant and possibly “dock and dine” facilities for boaters. Photo by Garth Meyer. Below, a view from above the 250-foot pier. Photo by J.P. Cordero.ER
