A Hawthorne man was found floating 100 yards off the shoreline in Manhattan Beach on Sunday, according to Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Brian Riley.
Humberto Loera, 54, was pronounced dead at the hospital on Sunday evening, said Manhattan Beach Lieutenant Andy Harrod.
Officials were called to the scene, between 40th and 41st Street, just before 6 p.m. In boats, local and county officials entered the water and retrieved Loera’s body.
Officials attempted to resuscitate him at the scene. He was subsequently transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Riley said.
Loera’s wife was out of the country when the drowning occurred and has since been notified.
County Fire Inspector Tony Imbrenda advised that those swimming in the ocean should always be in pairs or groups and swim in front of a manned lifeguard tower. For those swimming alone, he said to always let family or friends know where you are going.
“You want to be informed about conditions in the water with regard to rip currents,” he added. “Be well prepared, hydrated and well-fed.”
