History typically favors the powerful: the kings, queens, dictators, and presidents whose lives have been chronicled throughout the ages.

The Hermosa Beach Historical Society has a different approach: chronicling the ordinary lives that create a community, whether they be surfers, Sandpipers, beach volleyball players, activists, and local business owners.

“The people of a town determine its history,” said Hermosa Beach Historical Society spokesperson Dorothy Courtney.

This hyper-local approach to history is on display in the exhibits and artifacts at the Hermosa Beach Museum. To preserve that history, the Historical Society is holding its fourth annual gala to raise money for museum staffing, exhibits, and educational programs.

The theme for this year’s gala is “Dancing Into the Future” and guests are asked to the dress how they see themselves in the future. The event will feature a live band playing electronic music.

The four-hour gala promises to interesting for all generations.

The organization is especially determined to capture the imagination of younger members of the community. During the dinner, it will honor a family that has lived in Hermosa Beach for more than 50 years, emphasizing every generation and its contribution to the community.

“You have to teach young people that they are the future history makers, not the king or president,” Courtney said.

The gala is Saturday, Nov. 10 from 6 to 10 p.m. at St. Cross Church. The Bottle Inn will provide dinner and Uncorked, the wine and beer.

Tickets are $85 and $150 a pair. They are available at Gum Tree, Hair Mechanics or on hermosabeachhistoricalsociety.org
