HBPD officers passing the torch

Hermosa View student Elijah Taylor joins officers from the Hermosa Beach Police Department for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics. On Monday afternoon, officers from the Redondo Beach Police Department handed off the torch to the HBPD, who ran along Hermosa Avenue, then up to Manhattan Avenue at the Five Corners before making the pass to the waiting Manhattan Beach Police Department. The Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1981 and now passes through all 50 states. In 2016, more than 200 law enforcement organizations participated and raised more than $1.5 million. The Southern California branch is the largest leg, with more than 3,500 officers in the region participating. Known as “the final leg,” officers will carry the torch nearly 900 miles, passing through 200 communities before arriving at the Summer Games’ Opening Ceremony this Saturday morning in Long Beach.
