Hermosa Unplugged
Hermosa is aiming for a social media-free day on Tuesday. Dubbed “Hermosa Unplugged,” the event is a response to what elected officials describe as growing concern about the effects of corrosive conversations on Facebook and other forums. In a statement announcing the date, Mayor Stacey Armato said that she uses social media and appreciates its potential to inform, but worries that it is warping the way people communicate.
“I also see a growing trend to go to social media first with criticism and concerns, rather than having a conversation with a neighbor, city official or other person who might have easily addressed those concerns,” Armato said.
To kick off the day, city staff and elected officials are asking residents to come to the courtyard at City Hall for coffee and conversation between 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
North traffic meeting
The city of Hermosa Beach and the Hermosa Beach City School District will host a joint meeting Monday night to discuss plans to deal with traffic impacts likely to stem from the reopening of North School. Following complaints from nearby residents during the permitting process for North, and letters from the city describing perceived flaws in the district’s traffic analysis, the city and the district entered into an agreement earlier this year. Under the agreement, the district agreed to work with the city to create a “Neighborhood Traffic Management Plan,” and to hold community meetings to gather input on what it ought to contain. The meeting will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will take place in the Hermosa Valley Multi-Purpose Room.
