Rain drain

A sinkhole closed 35th Street in Hermosa Beach, between Hermosa and Manhattan avenues last Thursday. The street was reopened Friday afternoon after work crews filled in the 15-foot-square hole.

Lights out

A light pole in the Trader Joe’s parking lot at Pacific Coast Highway and Aviation Boulevard landed on a car after being knocked down by heavy winds Sunday evening.

Death Valley run

Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach are partnering in the 33rd annual Baker to Las Vegas Challenge Cup Relay. The 120-mile race starts at 8 a.m. on Sat., March 23 in Baker and ends 24 hours later at the Hilton Hotel Convention Center in Las Vegas. Baker is a town of 700 at the south end of Death Valley. Temperatures reach 100 degrees, but some years drop to below freezing. Nearly 300 teams from around the world participate, representing law enforcement, probation departments and prosecutors.

The Comedy & Magic Club is hosting a fundraiser for the Hermosa-Manhattan team on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. To purchase tickets call Sharon Stine at (310) 318-0301 or email her at sstine@hermosapolice.org.

$10,000 quick pitch contest

Representatives from up to 10 local nonprofit organizations are invited to compete for a $10,00 grant being offered by the Hermosa Friends Foundation. Presentations are limited to four minutes and will be voted on by members of the Hermosa Friends Foundation. A $10,000 check will be presented to the winner at the event Thursday, March 28, 7 p.m. at the Hermosa Beach Second Story Theatre. Reception will be 5 p.m. at the Hermosa Beach Historical Museum, 710 Pier Avenue Hermosa Beach. For contest application and rules, please visit www.hermosafriends.org.

Farmers markets

Certified farmers markets sponsored by the Hermosa Beach Chamber and the Hermosa Beach Rotary Club are held every Wednesday and Friday. The Chamber’s market on Wednesdays is 1 to 6 p.m. on Pier Plaza. The Rotary market is Wednesdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot next to Clark Field at Valley Drive and 10th Street.
