Hermosa Beach About Town

Valley gets ‘Distinguished’

The middle school component of Hermosa Valley School was named a California Distinguished School last week, the state’s highest honor for its public schools. The award, announced last week by the California Department of Education, lasts for two years. Valley, which serves Hermosa Beach City School District students in grades four through eight, was named a distinguished school for elementary instruction last year. As a result, all grade levels on the campus are now covered by the Distinguished School designation.

Musical history walk

Take a stroll through Hermosa’s storied musical history this Saturday morning. The Beach Cities Health District is organizing a group walk of the Experience GPS Tour, which was designed by Hermosa resident Adam Malovani and debuted last summer. Tourtakers download an app on a smartphone, and are guided by the voice of Joe Nolte, of Hermosa proto-punkers The Last, through stops at iconic venues like the Lighthouse Cafe and the former Church that once housed Black Flag. The tour takes about 90 minutes and begins at 10 a.m. at Waterman’s on Pier Plaza with complimentary refreshments. To register, email bluezonesproject@bchd.org or call (310) 374-3426.
