Hermosa Beach About Town

Garage sale next weekend

Hermosa Beach will hold its second annual community-wide garage sale next weekend.

The event, which will begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, encourages residents to put out unwanted items for sale or donation. Last year, the city used Instagram to help residents publicize various items that would be for sale, and more than 150 households participated. Last summer, the garage sale received an award from the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Climate Protection Awards Program.

Along with helping residents tidy up, the garage sale is designed to create more space for residents to park their cars. Hermosa, perpetually short of street parking, also has an abundance of nonstandard lot sizes, and cars parked in driveways frequently extend into the sidewalk. This forces pedestrians to walk in the street to get around the cars, and can prove especially dangerous for those in wheelchairs.

Parking in a way that extends onto the sidewalk is against state law, but until recently Hermosa did not aggressively enforce the ordinance. Facing ongoing complaints from accessibility advocates, city councilmembers chose to gradually phase in enforcement, and use the garage sale to educate residents.
