Hermosa Beach: Police Beat

Counterfeit money

A customer bought items with a fake $100 bill at a store in downtown Hermosa last Thursday, police said.

The customer made purchases at Yak and Yeti, a retail store on the 1100 block of Hermosa Avenue, about 5 p.m. The suspect paid with the false bill, received an unknown amount of change and left the establishment, police said.

Local police have noticed an increase in the circulation of counterfeit money recently. The development of ultra high-quality printers and the availability of specialty paper have made it relatively easy to produce passable counterfeit money, said HBPD Sgt. Robert Higgins.

To protect against fraud, businesses should carry a currency pen or a black light near the register, Higgins said.
