Hermosa Beach City Manager Suja Lowenthal received a 3% salary increase and a 7% bonus for the current fiscal year on a 4 to 1 vote of the City Council at its Tuesday, November 12 meeting.
The raise brings her salary to $281,376. The bonus is $19,122.
Lowenthal joined the city in 2018.
Mayor Dean Francois voted against the increases.
“This is a hard decision. But based on the failure of the sales tax measure, and the need for fiscal responsibility, I intend to vote against the increases,” Francois said.
Councilmember Mike Detoy, after motioning to approve the increases, praised Lowenthal for assembly and retaining a strong staff.
“That’s a ‘unicorn’ accomplishment,” he said in comparing the city to a highly successful startup.
“The Police Chief has told us we haven’t lost an officer in four to five years. That’s a reflection of leadership,” he added.
Councilmember Raymond Jackson, after seconding the motion, characterized Francois’ opposition to the compensation increases as “cowering to the vocal minority.”
“Talk of out of control spending is a load of crap. We don’t get dedicated employees by not taking care of them. I think we’re doing a heck of a job,” Jackson said.
“I simply stated a raise and a bonus are things I cannot support. I look forward to working with the city manager and city staff.” Francois responded. ER
