Green hero

Tireless environmental activist Dency Nelson of Hermosa has won the top prize in a countywide “Earth Month Heroes” contest by KCBS-TV, earning a $1,000 donation to PlugInAmerica, a nonprofit coalition of electric car drivers and advocates of energy independence and clean air.

Nelson said we “can keep both us and the planet alive and healthy if we use science and common sense in our day-to-day lives. It doesn’t require any real sacrifice, it is fun, and it is ultimately kinder to both the planet and to our budgets.”

RIP

The City Council noted the recent passing of two men who made their marks as far back as the 1960s in Hermosa, Frank E. Sasine, Jr., a councilman from 1960 to 1964, and Joe Melchione, a member of the Dewey Weber Surf Team.

Councilman Michael DiVirgilio said Sasine and his wife have been very active in local endeavors such as the Historical Society, Friends of the Library and Sister Cities.

Mayor Jeff Duclos said Melchione’s support was instrumental in an ongoing push for a surf legends statue at the Community Center.
