About Town Hermosa Beach: Heal the Bay, GI Joe Run

More accolades: Heal the Bay has recognized the City of Hermosa Beach for the two innovative storm water runoff projects completed last year that helped achieve top grades for ocean water quality in all categories of the organization’s 2010-2011 Annual Beach Report Card, announced Mayor Peter Tucker.

“We are pleased that Heal the Bay recognized the work our city has done to protect and improve local water quality,” Tucker said.

Heal the Bay singled out the Strand infiltration trench and the infiltration system that was installed along upper Pier Avenue as part of the street’s sweeping makeover.

The projects, which also have been honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, capture urban runoff and storm water, then filter out pollutants before they can reach the ocean.

The projects helped the city’s Hermosa Pier site earn A-grades in every category on Heal the Bay’s report card, including during wet weather when past report cards recorded slightly lower grades.

GI Joe run: GI Joe Boot Camp and the City of Hermosa Beach host the tri-annual Pier-2-Pier Sand Run/Walk 7 a.m. Saturday, June 11 at the Hermosa Beach Pier, “located at 1 Pier Ave. in Hermosa Beach.”

Joe Charles, aka GI Joe, has hosted the event for the past 11 years. The Hermosa Beach Community Center has partnered with GI Joe Boot Camp to offer this approximately four mile “trip in the sand” – almost a mile more than a traditional 5k route.

The registration fee is $35. To register or to learn more about G.I. Joe Boot Camp see mbbootcamp.com or call 310-836.9339. Day-of registration begins 6 a.m.; the run/walk begins promptly at 7 a.m.

The summer run/walk will feature professional timing, a post-event awards party hosted by Cantina Real restaurant on the Pier Plaza, and entertainment.

Awards will be given for first and second place overall finishers. All registered participants will receive goodie bags and T-shirts.
