Disaster prep
Beach Cities Joint CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is seeking Hermosa volunteers to participate in a local “ShakeOut drill” on the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 15.
Participants must be CERT members with full personal protective equipment and appropriate footwear (no sandals or flip-flops. CERT members wishing to participate can RSVP to training@mbcerta.org with name, address, phone number and email.
The drill, in cooperation with California’s “Great Shakeout” earthquake preparedness drill, will be conducted in a Manhattan Beach residential area near Mira Costa High School.
The goal is for CERT organizations to practice mutual aid during a disaster. The drill scenario will simulate massive earthquake damage and secondary damage from a gas line explosion.
School recognized
The private Fusion Academy & Learning Center, with 10 California campuses, including one in Hermosa, has been ranked 3,989th on Inc. magazine’s annual “Inc. 5000” list of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies.
“We are honored to be recognized as one of the fastest growing companies in the nation,” said founder Michelle Rose Gilman.
“We are especially proud of providing students, who might otherwise have fallen through the cracks of the traditional education system, with an education that is tailored specifically to meet their individual needs,” she said.
The alternative private school for students in grades sixth through 12th was named to the Inc. list for its rapid and sustained growth over the past two years, in which it opened eight of its campuses.
This marks the second time the school, which was ranked 62nd among education companies on the list, has been featured on the Inc. 5000.
Fusion Academy, a college-prep private school offering one-to-one classes, personalized teaching methods and flexible scheduling, launched 20 years ago in the San Diego area.
