This year’s Hermosa Beach Person of the Year Award, for the first time since the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce created the award in 1959, was awarded posthumously.

The award was accepted by psychologist and Shock Boxx Gallery owner Mike Collins on behalf of Hermosa therapist Kevin Sousa. In addition to a clinical practice, Sousa owned a recording studio, performed widely with his band, and was active locally in politics, most notably during the Keep Hermosa Beautiful/Stop Oil campaign in 2015. Sousa passed away of melanoma in May 2023. Collins described his close friend as a “Rock Star therapist” and “life force” for the community.
