Hermosa public school students continued to score high on standardized academic tests, improving slightly in history, math and science, and holding steady in English language arts.
In the latest round of California Standards Tests, 87 percent of the students in Hermosa’s two-campus, K-8 district scored proficient or above in English language arts, holding steady with the scores of the year before, according to results released by the California Department of Education.
Ninety percent of Hermosa students scored proficient or better in history, a 1 percent improvement from the year before.
Eighty-nine percent of the students scored proficient or better in math, marking a 2 percent improvement from the year before.
Ninety percent of Hermosa students scored proficient or better in history, a 1 percent improvement from the year before.
Ninety-two percent of the students scored proficient or better in science, a 3 percent improvement from the year before.
The testing is designed to measure whether the kids’ education meets the state’s academic standards. Most of the testing targeted eighth graders and high school kids, while second grade students and those younger were not tested.
Eighth grade
Among Hermosa eighth graders, 68 percent scored in the highest level, advanced, in English language arts, 22 percent scored proficient, 7 percent scored in the basic range, 1 percent scored below basic, and 2 percent scored far below basic.
(Some of the following grade level breakdowns do not total 100 percent, because of mathematical rounding of scores.)
Forty-six percent scored in the advanced level in general math, 43 percent scored proficient, 11 percent scored in the basic range, and none scored below.
Eighty percent scored in the advanced level in algebra, 17 percent scored proficient, 3 percent scored in the basic range, and none scored below.
In history, 67 percent scored in the advanced level, 23 percent scored proficient, 7 percent scored in the basic range, 2 percent scored below basic, and none scored far below basic.
Eighty-three percent scored in the advanced level in life sciences, 9 percent scored proficient, 7 percent scored in the basic range, 1 percent scored below basic, and none scored far below basic.
Other grades
Among seventh graders, 56 percent scored in the advanced level in English language arts, 31 percent scored proficient, 9 percent scored in the basic range, 3 percent scored below basic, and none scored far below basic.
Fifty-one percent of the seventh graders scored in the advanced level in math, 35 percent scored proficient, 11 percent scored in the basic range, 3 percent scored below basic, and none scored far below basic.
Among sixth graders, 49 percent scored in the advanced level in English language arts, 29 percent scored proficient, 18 percent scored in the basic range, 3 percent scored below basic, and 1 percent scored far below basic.
Thirty-nine percent of the sixth graders scored in the advanced level in math, 38 percent scored proficient, 16 percent scored in the basic range, 5 percent scored below basic, and 1 percent scored far below basic.
Among fifth graders, 63 percent scored in the advanced level in English language arts, 28 percent scored proficient, 8 percent scored in the basic range, 2 percent scored below basic, and none scored far below basic.
Fifty-six percent of the fifth graders scored in the advanced level in math, 35 percent scored proficient, 8 percent scored in the basic range, 1 percent scored below basic, and none scored far below basic.
In life sciences, fifth graders scored 53 percent advanced, 40 percent proficient 7 percent basic and 1 percent below basic.
Among fourth graders, 77 percent scored in the advanced level in English language arts, 18 percent scored proficient, 4 percent scored in the basic range, 2 percent scored below basic, and none scored far below basic.
Eighty-four percent of the fourth graders scored in the advanced level in math, 12 percent scored proficient, 2 percent scored in the basic range, 2 percent scored below basic, and 1 percent scored far below basic.
Among third graders, 47 percent scored in the advanced level in English language arts, 35 percent scored proficient, 13 percent scored in the basic range, 5 percent scored below basic, and 1 percent scored far below basic.
Sixty-six percent of the third graders scored in the advanced level in math, 25 percent scored proficient, 7 percent scored in the basic range, 2 percent scored below basic, and none scored far below basic.
In a separate Academic Performance Index, which state officials use to measure schools against each other, Hermosa students routinely rank in the top 10 percent across California.
