The City Council has honored local surfer Tom Graner as the winner of the first annual Hermosa Beach Parking Permit Art Contest for a design featuring him paddling on a surfboard off the city’s coastline.
Graner’s winning design and artwork will be featured on city-issued parking permits for 2011-2012.
“Congratulations to Mr. Graner for submitting this winning design for the Hermosa Beach parking permits,” Mayor Peter Tucker said. “It is always inspiring to recognize and showcase the works and talents of one of our local residents, and this design captures the lifestyle and the ocean we all enjoy in Hermosa Beach.”
The parking permit design contest, which was open to all Hermosa Beach residents, gave the community the opportunity to design the city’s official parking permit for 2011-2012. The city received numerous submissions, and the city manager selected Graner’s design as the winner.
Graner’s design features a photo of him paddling on his surfboard in 2000, when he made a “first morning” visit to tour the USS Elliot, a Navy destroyer that has since been decommissioned. The ship was anchored off Hermosa Beach’s coast for a “port call,” and surfers who paddled out to the ship were permitted to tour it.
Michael Flaherty, Graner’s surfing partner, took the photo.
The new parking permits featuring his design will be available for purchase in February at Hermosa Beach City Hall and through hermosabch.org. ER
