Hermosa Arts Foundation sponsors annual 10-minute play festival

The Hermosa Arts Foundation is sponsoring “Take Two,” the second annual 10-minute play festival brought together under the production of Gerry Athas-Vazquez. It is an evening consisting of four plays individually written and directed by members of a Hermosa Beach writers group.
“It is a chance to come experience theater and see a variety of stories and writing,” Athas-Vazquez, the group’s founder, said.
The group formed over four years ago and aims to bring writers of television plays and screenplays together. The writers group is a nonprofit organization that falls under the Hermosa Arts Foundation, an organization that helps with funding art productions in Hermosa Beach.
The writers meet once a week to read each other’s work in progress, and offer input and constructive criticism.
“I always wanted to write plays and so forth, so I got to a certain point and I said ‘Now I am going to do this,’” Athas-Vazquez said about starting the group. “It gave me the opportunity to write for myself.”
The 10-minute plays have become widely popular in today’s day and age. While each play is very short to keep the audience engaged, the story follows the same structure as a full-length play with a storyline built upon a beginning, middle and end.
“They are short and sweet,” Athas-Vazquez said.
Her 10-minute play centers on a man and woman meeting at a golf course.
“Take Two” will be held 8 p.m. Saturday at the Second Story Theater in the Hermosa Beach Community Center. There is a suggested donation of $10 per ticket which can be made at the box office.
As the Hermosa Beach writers group plans to continue showcasing their work to the community, they are always looking for more writers to join the group. The group is open to writers of all levels and kinds.
“We want people to get involved,” Athas-Vazquez said. “It is a great way for writers to get feedback and help one another.”
