Last season, Mira Costa gave Palos Verdes its first league loss since 2007 while earning a share of the Bay League championship. This year, the Mustangs want it all.

Coach Jon Reichardt’s team got off on the right foot Monday behind the arm of Emily Milstead, whose five goals help propel Mira Costa to an 8-6 victory over visiting Palos Verdes in the league opener for both teams.

Jordan Raney scored twice and Natalie Lavinsky added one goal while goalkeeper Bianca Magno came up big recording 11 saves for the Mustangs.

Mira Costa (9-2, 1-0) continues Bay League action with home games against West on Tuesday and Peninsula on Wednesday. Both games are scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

The Mustangs hope their win will draw some attention to the local girls water polo teams. There are only two South Bay teams ranked in the CIF-Southern Section polls, both in Division 5 where El Segundo holds the third spot and Chadwick is ranked No 5.

After opening its league season at Peninsula on Wednesday, Redondo’s girls water polo team will host Palos Verdes on Tuesday and West on Wednesday in 3 p.m. contests.
