The first of two meetings between the boys and girls soccer teams from Mira Costa and Redondo will take place Friday at 3 p.m. with Redondo hosting the boys contest and the girls battling it out at Mira Costa.

Mira Costa (14-1, 1-0) opened league play Tuesday with a thrilling 2-0 road win at West after Kimby Keever and Mandy McKeegan scored goals in the first of two 10-minute overtimes periods.

Goalkeeper Nonie Frischette had four saves to keep Mira Costa in the game.

The Mustangs continue league action hosting Leuzinger on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

“I would say Peninsula and Redondo will be our big contenders in the Bay League,” Mira Costa head coach Patty Perkinson said. “But then again, anything can happen in the Bay League. It always seems to be very strong.”

Redondo looks to rebound after falling to host Peninsula 2-1 on Tuesday in the league opener for both teams.

Goalkeeper Erinn Middo had 10 saves while Samantha Witteman scored the lone goal for the Sea Hawks who host West on Tuesday in a 3 p.m. game.

“The Bay League is one of the toughest leagues in the state,” Redondo coach Shelly Marsden said. “On paper, Mira Costa could be the team to beat. Most of their players are good, very athletic and fast. Their coach always has them ready to go. Palos Verdes, who has come off a little bit of a dynasty, has some good incoming freshman to go with solid returners. They have a very good coach and will be very organized and very hungry. Peninsula had a very good team last year and returns almost everybody.”

Mira Costa is the only girls soccer team from the Bay League to be ranked in the CIF Southern Section polls, holding the No. 6 spot in Division 2.

Boys Soccer

Mira Costa (6-4-6-, 0-0-1) and West (10-1-3, 0-0-1) battled to a scoreless tie in the league opener at Mira Costa. West entered the game ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll. Palos Verdes was ranked No. 8.

Teddy Sampson recorded eight saves to preserve the tie for the Mustangs who, after their game with Redondo, will continue league action Tuesday with a 3 p.m. road game against Leuzinger.

“I feel we have as good of a chance to win the Bay League as West and Palos Verdes,” Mira Costa head coach Gary Smith said. “Based on what I have seen so far, these are the three toughest teams. We have enough fit and talented players to compete with any team. My most consistent and strongest players are defenders Paul Orozco, Michael Cassen and midfielder Jess Chamberlain who are all seniors.”

The Mustangs are captained by Cassen, Michael deVirgilio and Brad Baeuchler.

Redondo opened is Bay League season against Peninsula Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.

Following their game against Mira Costa, the Sea Hawks will play at West Tuesday in a 3 p.m. contest.
