Volleyball: MaxPreps recently announced its California All-State Volleyball Teams. Redondo’s Tommy Chaffins was voted Division 1 Coach of the Year, Sea Hawk setter Norene Iosia was selected Player of the Year and outside hitter Megan Rice was named to the all-state team.
Basketball: Redondo Beach’s Parras Middle School was well represented at the Elks Hoop Shoot District Championships held Jan. 9 at North Torrance High School where two Redondo Beach athletes advanced to the California State Championships on Saturday, Jan. 30 at a location to be determined. Allen Garcia, the 2013 California State Champ, hit 22 of 25 free throws (88%) to clinch the 12-13 year-old boys’ District Championship while Josette Lewis captured the girls 12-13 division. Winners of the California State Championships advance to the Regionals in Las Vegas (date to be determined) followed by the National Championships in Chicago on April 16.
Fitness: Registration is ongoing for the GI Joe Winter Beach Boot Camp that runs Monday, Jan. 25 through Friday, Mar. 25. Open to adults 18 and over, classes are held Mon-Wed-Fri from 6-7 a.m. or 9-10 a.m. Fees are $220 for Manhattan Beach residents ($242 non-resident). To register, visit citymb.info/registration.
Baseball: Mira Costa will be holding its Ski Week Baseball Camp is for 5-13 year olds, Monday through Friday, Feb. 15-19 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Three and four-day partial camp participation is available as are sibling discounts. Junior high campers will be separated and introduced to a high school practice. Entry fee for the week is $250. Running: Registration is available for the 38th annual Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K Run/Walk presented by Kaiser Permanente to be held Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016. More than 8,000 race enthusiasts will congregate at Seaside Lagoon for the 10K, 5K and 10K baby buggy races and popular costume contest presented by the King Harbor Association. The event also includes a two-day Health and Fitness Expo presented by Michelob Ultra. Entry fee is $35 for the 5K; $4 for the 10K and Baby Buggy races. Registration is open for the 13th Annual Village Runner St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run and Community Walk to be held at 8 a.m. Sunday, Mar. 13 in Redondo Beach’s Riviera Village. Following the 5K at 9:30 a.m., the next generation of runners will compete in the kid’s Chase Stecyk Leprechaun Dash for Gold. All participants receive a T-shirt and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers. The event begins with a two-day Health and Fitness Expo on Saturday, Mar. 12. Fundraising: The Redondo Union Baseball program is holding a fundraiser sponsored by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. This fundraiser will raise $3,500 for the Redondo Union Baseball program and the varsity team will get to play a game at Angel Stadium on March 19. The program must sell 700 ticket vouchers to a regular season Angels game. The vouchers are $20 each and can be exchanged for one game ticket.
