Junior indoor volleyball players become national medalists

Although the volleyball community’s focus is on the beach game during summer months, many local indoor volleyball teams enjoyed medal-winning performances at recently held Junior National Championships.

At the 42nd AAU Girls Junior National Volleyball Championships in Orlando. Fla. June 15-26, the Southern California Volleyball Association (SVCA) Girls 15 Roxy team were champions of the Classic Division defeating Puerto rico in the final match.

At the USA Volleyball Boys Junior National Champions held in Columbus, Ohio June 28 – July 5, South Bay teams brought home five medals.

Led by MVP Sean Morrissey, the SCVA Boys 17 Quiksilver team knocked off Puerto Rico in the championship match to claim gold in the 17 Open division. Also named to the all-tournament team were the South Bay’s Lucas Lossone, Roy McFarland and Casey McGarry.

SCVA teams also won bronze medals in the 14 Open and 12 Club division.

Manhattan Beach Surf had two teams earn bronze medals. Led by all-tournament selections Max Cajuste and Dane Johnson, the MB Surf Nike 15s placed third in the 15 Open competition.

The MB Surf Nike 16s won bronze in the Open division. Jouis Murray and JP Reilly were named to the all-tournament team.

The USAV Girls Jr. National Championship took place June 23 – July 2 in New Orleans. Sunshine Volleyball South Bay teams won three medals in the American division.

Sunshine won gold in the 15-year-old competition and was led by MVP Elise Austin and all-tournament selections Sidney Smith and Kira Zimmerman.

The 12s won silver and the 16s won bronze with Alexandra Boyd, Erin Davis and Alexa Underwood earning all-tournament honors.
