“He’s good because he is a lawyer. What the hell do they do, other than make laws,” said Governor Jerry Brown, in praise of Ted Lieu. Lieu is a Democratic Party candidate in the Tuesday, Feb. 15 special election for the 28th District seat, vacated by fellow Democrat Jenny Oropeza, who died last October.

Brown addressed Lieu supporters Friday morning at Lieu’s downtown Torrance campaign headquarters. State Senate leader Darrel Steinberg also praised Lieu, saying, “He’s an honest and good guy. Electing him would have a huge impact on California.”
Steinberg noted that with Lieu’s election and the support of all other Senate Democrats, the governor will need just one Republican Senator’s support to put his proposed tax extension on the June Ballot.
Other candidates in Tuesday’s election are Republicans Bob Valentine, Jeffrey E. Fortini, and James P. Thompson, Democrat Kevin McGurk and non partisan candidates Mark Lipman and Mike Chamness.
The seat will be awarded to the candidate who receives over 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate receives over 50 percent on Tuesday, the two top finishers, regardless of party affiliation, will compete in a run-off election in April. ER
