Lieu keeps governor’s pen busy

South Bay State Senator Ted Lieu found a sympathetic pen in Governor Jerry Brown earlier this month when the governor signed the following authored by Lieu:

SB 746 makes California the only state in the nation to ban the use of indoor tanning booths by anyone under 18.

SB 698 is intended to reduce unemployment by raising the standards for job training programs.

SB 757 requires out-of-state health insurers to comply with California’s anti-discrimination laws in providing domestic partners the same coverage that is provided to spouses.

SB 917 bans the sale of pets from street corners and temporary retail locations.

SB 857 prohibits the Public Employment Relations Board from assessing damages based on a mere threat of a strike.

The governor also signed several bills that Lieu supported, co-sponsored or co-authored. SB 813 helps veterans attend college; SB 806 addresses pay abuses in the California National Guard, and SB 622 strengthens registration requirements for sex offenders.

Lieu also co-authored AB 900 and a companion measure to streamline the review process for construction projects. The bill is expected to help clear the way for AEG’s proposed football stadium in downtown Los Angeles.

The governor vetoed several bills authored by Lieu. Among them: a bill requiring implanting microchips in cats and dogs that are adopted from a shelter and lost animals when they are reclaimed by their owners; a bill that would have encouraged water conservation by allowing artificial turf in certain developments: and a bill that would have protected grieving families from disruptive protests at funerals.
