Loyola High School captured its second consecutive and fourth overall CIF Southern Section Commissioner’s Cup while El Segundo and Mira Costa earned the third and tenth spots, respectively, in rankings that indicate the most successful high school athletic programs. Chadwick placed second among girls sports.
Winners are determined by a point system that provides: five points for a divisional championship; three points for a divisional runner-up finish; two points for advancing to the semifinal round or a third place finish in a team-place finish sport (i.e. cross country, golf, swimming and diving, track and field); and one point for a fourth place finish in a team-place finish sport. Several tie-breaking methods are used to determine finishes.
El Segundo joined Servite and Serra (Gardena) with 15 points but emerged with the highest tie-breaker to place third behind Loyola (19) and Mater Dei (16). The Eagles won CIF titles in water polo and volleyball and earned 3 points in swimming and diving and 2 points in baseball.
Mira Costa finished with 11 points, winning a CIF title in football and runner-up positions in water polo and volleyball.
In the girls competition, Chadwick finished with 12 points, second to Harvard-Westlake’s 18. The Dolphins captured a CIF title in cross country, a runner-up in tennis, and earned two points each in basketball and water polo.
Serra’s girls finished 9th with CIF titles in basketball and track and field, while the school’s male athletes earned a 5th spot with CIF championships in football, basketball and track and field. Serra and Corona del Mar were the only schools to have both boys and girls programs in the top ten. ER
