If you ever venture out beyond the South Bay Bubble, you might consider a trip to downtown Los Angeles and the “Arts District,” which borders Little Tokyo and Boyle Heights. Especially if you love taking great photos in new locations. (I mean, how many photos of the Manhattan Beach Pier do you need?)

The Arts District is a “virtual outdoor art gallery” full of colorful street art, graffiti and murals. Many of the best galleries in L.A. (including Art Share LA and DENK) have moved from mid-town to the thriving Arts District. And of course, there’s plenty of shopping and great eating (The Pie Hole, the Arts District Brewery.)
Recently I’ve fallen in love with using some of the great urban murals as backdrops for a photo shoot, first in San Francisco’s Mission District or closer to home in Los Angeles in the Arts District.
In my latest episode of #PhotowalksTV, I show you the district, and how to take best advantage photographically of such a rich backdrop. The Arts District is one of the best, free, photo locales in L.A. Want some basic smartphone photography tips that will enable you to shoot photos like a pro? Check the video below for them, and here’s a great bonus! Please meet us in person on February 19th when we lead a free photowalk of the district. Sign up here
When we meet, our 90 minute, five-block photowalk is all of 0.5 miles, with no hills, and it will take us from the Arts District Co-Op and a fabulous alley with over 10 murals, and end at the Pie Hole, a wonderful restaurant with outdoor seating. Besides terrific pies of all varieties, the Pie Hole also serves food, like salads and sandwiches.
Reservations are going fast for the Photowalk, so please let me know your intentions via Eventbrite sooner rather than later. Sign up here
