Hoopsters earn All-Bay League honors

Three Redondo Union High School players joined one from rival Mira Costa in earning top honors for their performances throughout the 2010-11 basketball season.

Redondo’s powerful female duo of senior forward Michelle Lowery and senior guard Shayna Stuart were selected as Co-Most Valuable Players in the Bay League while Mira Costa four-year starter Kylie Nakamine was named as the league’s Most Outstanding Player.

Lowery averaged 7.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per games and the defensive standout Stuart, who averaged 7.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest, led Redondo to its first Bay League title since 2007-08 when the Sea Hawks shared the crown with Mira Costa.

Nakamine was the leader for the runner-up Mustangs averaging 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.7 steals and 3.2 assists per game. The 5-foot-5 guard was the nation’s best free throw shooter, connecting on 169 of 181 attempts for a 93.4 average.

First team All-Bay League members included Redondo guard Riki Murakami and Mira Costa center Joelle Herron.

Redondo had three guards named to the second team with Ashiana Antar, Annie Park and Rachel Scarlett being honored.

On the boys side, Redondo senior guard Martyre Demarco was named Co-Most Outstanding Player after leading Redondo to a second-place tie with Leuzinger and an overall record of 15-13.

Sea Hawk teammate guard Jacquise Bates also earned first team honors along with Mira Costa forward Elliott Ozer, who averaged 20.1 and 6.8 rebounds per game.

Selected to the second team were Redondo guard Brandon Boyd and Mira Costa center Thomas Johnson. ER
