Village construction update

The developers working on the vast rebuild of the Manhattan Village mall this week announced groundbreaking on a new phase of the 44-acre, 573,000 sq. ft., $180 million redevelopment project. Kicking off with a ceremony on Jan. 16, construction has started on the Village Shops, which includes 60,942 square feet of retail/restaurant space (30,744 square feet in the South Village and 30,198 square feet in the North Village), two parking decks encompassing 956 spaces (South Deck, North Deck, including surface lots), a water feature, clock tower, unique seating areas and lush landscaping.

Completion of the Village Shops is scheduled for November 2020.

“Moving into this phase of redevelopment is the key component to achieve our vision at the property,” said Todd Henderson, head of Americas Real Estate at DWS. “With several facets of the project underway and in various stages, milestones and new experiences will be seen on a regular basis and excitement will continue to grow within the community.”

The groundbreaking continues a very active past nine months at Manhattan Village. ROC recently signed a lease to join a growing list of restaurants at the Village Shops. Late last month, 12 Tesla Supercharger stations were installed in the first of three parking decks. In October, JLL, which is overseeing managing and leasing Manhattan Village, announced it signed a lease with restaurant group Cocinas Y Calaveras LLC which will open Mercado Manhattan Beach, a popular Mexican dining concept. Also, in October, California Pizza Kitchen opened their new and improved, relocated restaurant. Joey Manhattan Beach and Urban Plates have also signed leases and M·A·C (Make-Up Art Cosmetics), Origins and Holly and Hudson Nail Lounge all opened in 2018.

A new full-service, upscale Macy’s will replace the existing two locations and become one consolidated 168,000-square-foot store. When complete, the new Manhattan Village will be a 648,000-square-foot indoor-outdoor dining and shopping experience introducing what the developers describe as “modern luxury and coastal-chic, while embracing the allure and hometown feel of the West Coast lifestyle.” The project is slated for full completion in 2020.
