Last call for

Little League

Manhattan Beach Little League, one of the community’s great local traditions, has issued a “last call” for kids who want to play baseball this season. Registration closes on Jan. 31 for kids age 4-7 to play tee-ball, coach pitch, and machine pitch baseball. These leagues are non-stress and put together with kids in similar schools so the kids get to know their classmates better as well as the entire community. For more information, contact info@mblittleleague.com or visit mblittleleague.com. The season starts March 2.

Waste hauling

On Feb. 5, the City Council will likely award the City’s next 7-year solid waste contract (start date July 1, 2020) to one of the three proposers: Athens Services, Waste Management or Waste Resources Technologies. A staff report from the Jan. 15 council meeting showed that whichever company is selected, rates will rise significantly, both for the City and residents. The most costly of the proposals, by Athens, would be $61 million over the life of the contract, a 114 percent increase over Waste Management’s current rates; the least expensive, Waste Management, would be $42 million, or a 47 percent increase. Residents will see a 25 to 86 percent increase in their individual rates, depending on which company is awarded the city’s largest contract.
