Local musician Gavin Heaney, aka Latch Key Kid, grew up next to Bruce’s Beach and still writes and records his music a few blocks away.
“I never knew that whole time that this injustice had been done right in my own neighborhood. No one has ever talked about it until recently,” Heaney said. “It is a very shameful thing to discover. I decided to write a song for the Bruce family so that I might lend my voice to their cause. The hardships their family has endured because of our city must be acknowledged and apologized for.”
“I’ve had many happy days in this town, this park and surfing that beach,” Heaney said. “It makes me very sad that the Bruce’s were denied their rightful place in society.”
