‘Adopt a child for the day’

The P.S. I Love You Foundation is holding its 12th annual “Adopt a Child for the Day” on Saturday, July 28 in Manhattan Beach. More than 250 volunteers will be paired one-on-one with inner city children from local shelters and service organizations for a day at the beach.

Activities for the children, ranging in age from 7 to 13, will include relay races, beauty camps, face painting, surf lessons, boogie boarding and swimming.

The event will be held just south of the Manhattan Beach pier between 6th and 8th streets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To register as a volunteer, visit www.psiloveyoufoundation.org. Volunteers must pay a $20 event fee, which will go toward providing a boogie board, beach towel and a t-shirt for each child.

Food waste recycling

On July 1, Waste Management launched a food waste recycling pilot program in Manhattan Beach. The six-month pilot program includes 800 homes and ten businesses citywide.

“Food waste makes up a significant amount of the material that ends up in the landfill,” said Public Works Director Jim Arndt, in a statement. “We hope the pilot will show an effective way to manage this waste in a cost effective and environmentally responsible manner.”

Residents will collect food waste using pails and biodegradable bags provided by the trash-hauler. Once the bag is full, residents will put the bags in a green waste cart for collection. The residents’ service days will not change, according to Waste Management.

All types of food waste will be collected, including meat, beans, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds, eggshells and paper products used in the kitchen. Plastic, liquids, Styrofoam and animal waste cannot be disposed of in the food waste containers.

The pilot program will run until Jan. 1, 2013, after which the city will decide whether to continue the program. For more information, call 310-830-7100.
