The Manhattan Beach pier, which has been closed since late March due to Covid-19 social distancing concerns will reopen Monday.

Mayor Richard Montgomery made the request earlier this week, and LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn helped advocate for the reopening of the city’s landmark. The city will be required to power wash the entire structure and post social distancing signing before the pier can reopen.

The City Council debated opening the pier without state and county approval at its Tuesday meeting, but a majority, led by Montgomery, chose to abide by the county’s authority.

“We handled the approval for reopening of the state-owned pier the right way – legally,” Montgomery said. “This was not about retail businesses or restaurants that needed to reopen. This was respecting the process and receiving support from LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn and Governor Newom’s office.”

“I know some of our residents were impatient,” Montomery added.
