Manhattan Beach Police Beat

Car break-ins, thefts

The beginning of 2019 has been met a rash of thefts from parked vehicles. According to Manhattan Beach police reports, eight vehicles were broken into between Jan. 6 and Jan. 8, including three from the El Porto parking lot. The thefts all occurred in the Sand Section of town and resulted mainly in the loss of wallets, money, and cell phones.

Two cars were also stolen. A Chevrolet Tahoe was reported stolen from the 2200 block of Grandview on the night of Jan. 9. The previous night, at Grandview and 23rd, a Mercedes Benz was stolen, but a call from a neighbor resulted in its recovery. According to police reports, at about 9 p.m. officers responded to a call reporting four males in a vehicle who appeared to be tampering with another vehicle. Three juvenile suspects were detained, and one fled on foot. Investigation revealed that the suspects had entered an open, detached garage and drove the car away a short distance, where they began to ransack it. Of the three juveniles who were arrested, one wore an ankle monitor while another had a no-bail warrant for auto theft.
