Six Burglaries

Six burglaries took place in Manhattan Beach during the first week of April, including three the police believe may be related due to their similarities.

All six burglaries took place between March 30 and April five. The three that appear to have been related all happened between 7 and 9 p.m. All three homes were entered through a second-story window and targeted the home’s master bedroom. Jewelry was stolen from each of the homes.

“My crime tip for people would be don’t leave anything in the backyard where they could climb up. And obviously, burglary alarms are helpful,  lighting is good, and cameras are excellent for us,” MBPD Sgt. Andy Abreu.

The three burglaries that may be related took place on the 600 block of 18th St., the 300 block of S. Dianthus, and the 800 block of 11th St. Abreau also recommended joining Neighborhood Watch and communicating with neighbors when you are gone from your home any extended period of time. He also urged residents to call MBPD if they see anything suspicious in their neighborhood.

“None of us are immune from crime,” he said. “But there are things we can do. The biggest thing, and I know it’s cliche, but if you see something, say something. If you see something out of place in your neighborhood, call the police and we’ll come and check it out.”

Call MBPD at 310-545-4566 for non-emergencies and 911 for emergencies.

Crime stats

MBPD released crime statistics for April 6 through April 12. Crimes included 3 assaults, two residential burglaries, four vehicle burglaries, and five thefts. According to MBPD, 17 arrests were made and 14 auto accidents occurred (four hit and run, two in which injuries occurred). Among the 38 crime reports taken, two were for the residential burglaries. One of those burglaries, which involved an unlocked home, included property loss. All three assaults were domestic disputes. And three of the car burglaries involved stolen catalytic converters from Toyota Priuses.

“Toyota Prius vehicles are consistently being targeted for their catalytic converters,” MBPD reported. “The cost to replace these parts is expensive. Seek advise from a mechanic to have a catalytic converter shield or cage installed.”
