Manhattan Beach residents facing frequent power outages

Over the past seven months, Manhattan Beach residents have experienced 18 power outages. Five outages were related to scheduled crew repairs, while 13 were unplanned, according to Southern California Edison’s Scott Gobble.

Gobble attributed the outages, which have affected between 400 to 4,000 homes, to splice failures, blown fuses, transformer failures, Mylar balloons, vegetation and wind.

“We rely on information coming back from our customers, specifically potential causes of outages so we can get the restoration done as quickly as possible,” Gobble said.

There’s a community meeting on Thursday, March 29 – 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers – with Southern California Edison representatives to discuss the power outages, the electric transmission network, and the status of maintenance activities.

How to handle a power outage:

• Turn off or disconnect any electronics you were using when the power went out.

• Leave one light on, so you’ll know when the power returns.

• Don’t light a fire, or burn charcoal for cooking, indoors.

• Keep a flashlight and extra batteries.

• All wires should be treated as live – stay 20 to 40 feet away from downed lines and call for service.

• Report your power outages by calling 800-655-4555 or 800-319-8765. Have your SCE account number handy – you’ll also be asked to provide address, the extent of the outage, and time it began.
