Due to a lack of candidates, the Nov. 3 election for two Manhattan Beach Unified School District board seats has been canceled.

The two incumbents who submitted their candidacies, current Board President Bill Fournell and board member Karen Komatinsky, will automatically be re-elected to the five-seat board for another four-year term.

The two also ran unopposed in 2011.

Komatinsky, who has a son at Mira Costa and a daughter at Manhattan Beach Middle School, originally joined the school board as an appointee in April 2011 when Amy Howorth was elected to the city council. Komatinsky then ran in that fall’s election and has been on the board since. Her job as a board member, which she does in addition to a full time job as a head hunter for Bench International, is personal.

“All of us have kids in the school district,” said Komatinsky. “We have skin in the game.”

In addition to having kids in the school district, Fournell, who was first elected in 2007, grew up in Manhattan Beach, attending Ladera Elementary, Center Junior High and Aviation High School.

“Giving back to my hometown has truly been one of the highlights of my life,” he said at the time of his last re-election.

Also a graduate of CSU Northridge, he now works as the head of agency marketing at Farmers Insurance. ER
