
Former El Camino College and West Torrance High School distance runner Teddy Kassa broke away from the pack Saturday morning beating a field of more than 2,700 finishers to win the 38th running of the Manhattan Beach 10K.
Kassa, 21, of Torrance crossed the finish line at the Manhattan Beach Pier with a time of 31 minutes, 41 seconds, the fastest time in three years.

Cheyne Inman, 29, of Manhattan Beach placed second at 33:25 edging Rolling Hills Estates’ 21-year-old Reo Miranda-Loverto who finished with a mark of 33:44.
Manhattan Beach’s Christine Bolf was the fastest among the 1,315 female runners at 37:23. The 31-year-old former Colorado University distance runner finished with the 23rd best time overall, improving her 2014 time of 38:26 when she placed seventh among the women.
Alison Kielty, 29, of Torrance was the second female to cross the finish line, edging Nathalie Higley, 45, of Redondo Beach (38:31) who was runner-up in last year’s race.
From the youngest runner (six-year-old William Webber) to the oldest (88-year-old Herbert Harger), participants left the start at 3rd Street and Valley/Ardmore, running through the streets of Manhattan Beach before heading west on Rosecrans Avenue to The Strand where they ran south to the finish line at the Manhattan Beach Pier.
The event had a true hometown feel to it with 17 runners from Manhattan Beach emerging as winners in 35 separate age divisions.
Undoubtedly no group was more pleased with its performance than the Chittenden family of Manhattan Beach. Anna (10) and Cara (13) won their respective age divisions while older sister Elizabeth (16) finished second in the 15-17 age group. Cy (14) placed third in the male 12-14 division and his time, combined with Elizabeth’s, was low enough (1:27:08) to win the Brother-Sister Team title. The sibling’s father, David, also competed in the 50-54 division.

Rick Weiss (El Segundo, 35-39, 34:23), Rick Esponda (Lomita, 40-44, 34:19), Ted Iantuono (Manhattan Beach, 45-49, 39:05), Jon Megeff (Rancho Palos Verdes, 50-54, 36:21), Richard Gust (Hermosa Beach, 55-59, 38:20), Ed Avol (Manhattan Beach, 60-64, 42:54), Marty Friedman (Manhattan Beach, 65-69, 45:52), Patrick Wickens (Redondo Beach, 70-74, 50:46), Jesse Cook (Thousand Oaks, 75-79, 55:18), Eugene Cook (Redondo Beach, 80-84, 1:24:43) and Richard Windishar (Manhattan Beach, 85-89, 1:17:32).

Female age group winners included Sloane Gasperov (Manhattan Beach, 1-8, 1:02:13), Anna Chittenden (Manhattan Beach, 9-11, 47:34), Cara Chittenden (Manhattan Beach, 12-14, 46:05), Charlotte Monk (Clovis, 15-17, 43:32), Maddy Ward (San Diego, 18-23, 42:32), Kielty (24-29), Bolf (30-34), Kate Myers (Manhattan Beach, 35-39, 38:36), Kaci Bacher (Manhattan Beach, 40-44, 44:17), Higley (45-49), Renee Williams-Smith (Hermosa Beach, 50-54, 42:45), Mary Lively (Manhattan Beach, 55-59, 44:48), Susan Moon (Manhattan Beach, 60-64, 52:58), Beth Robertson (Manhattan Beach, 65-69, 58:41), Corrine Schratz (Hermosa Beach, 70-74, 55:03), Karen Profet (Manhattan Beach, 75-79, 1:25:26) and Anna Martin (Manhattan Beach, 80-84, 1:42:04).
Carson (16) amd Dalton (14) Phillips, of Manhattan Beach, won the Brother-Brother team title with a combined time of 1:30:59 while Barbara Frank (55), of Hermosa Beach, and Charlene Lee (54), of Manhattan Beach, took top honors in the Sister-Sister category with a time of 2:04:09.
The Father-Daughter division was won by Chelsea (27) and Marc (57) Strange of Manhattan Beach (1:35:43) and the Father-Son title went to Manhattan Beach’s Andrew (17) and Christopher (49) Costley who combined for a time of 1:22:47.
The Mother-Daughter competition was won by Cara (16) and Lisa (47) Martinexz, of Manhattan Beach, who finished with a time of 1:37:50. The Manhattan Beach duo of Conor Beezhold (15) and Eileen O’Connor (50) captured the Mother-Son title with a combined time of 1:34:36.
