Beach Cities Sports: Running, soccer, surfing and more

Comprised of players from Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Hawthorne, the Manhattan Beach AYSO Boys Under-19 team won the Area 1D championship before taking third place in the AYSO Section 1 Southern California\Western Nevada\Western Arizona tournament held in Chino. Surfing: The South Bay Boardriders will be holding the South Bay Surf Series on Saturdays beginning Dec. 14. The series features all age groups, including the Micro Grom Division for under-9 year-olds. Participants receive t-shirts and other goodies and finalists from each division win prize packages. Surf Series ratings winner receive prizes such as free trips, surfboards, wetsuits and more. Contests include: Dec. 14 – sponsored by ET at 26th St., Manhattan Beach; Jan. 18 – Dive N Surf at El Porto; Feb. 8 – Becker at 26th. St., Manhattan Beach; Mar. 8 – Surf Concepts at El Porto; April 5 – Spyder at Manhattan Beach Pier. The championships will be held in May. For more information, visit southbayboardriders.com.

 

Running: Mira Costa girls cross country standout Abby Hong overtook five runners in the final mile to finish ninth at the Foot Locker Regionals held at Mt. San Antonio College. Her time of 19 minutes, 13.4 seconds on the 5K course qualified the senior for the Foot Locker Nationals at Balboa Park in San Diego on Saturday.

 

The annual Manhattan Beach Yuletide 5K will be held Saturday, Dec. 21 at 5:30 p.m. starting at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Glow necklaces will be given to all participants who will run on the luminaria-lit course with hard-packed sand during the low tide. Kids can compete in the Little Elves Dash following the 5K. Cost is $35 for the 5K; $30 for the Kid’s Races. Add $5 for late 5K registration after Dec. 19. Registration is available at mb5k.com. Registration is open for the 36th annual Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K presented by Kaiser Permanente to be held Sunday, Feb. 2. More than 9, 000 race enthusiasts will congregate at Seaside Lagoon for the 10K, 5K and 10K baby buggy races and popular costume contest presented by the King Harbor Association. The event also includes a two-day Health and Fitness Expo presented by Michelob Ultra. Entry fee is $30 through Dec. 31 (add $5 after). A combo package is available for $50 (add $10 after Dec. 31). Soccer: Registration is open for the Manhattan Beach Sand and Surf Winter Development League. Open to boys and girls in U6-U10 divisions, the league includes: experienced, top level, professional coaching; a T-Shirt; technical skills clinic one hour before each game; one game on Saturday or Sunday; and individual player evaluations.
