Heidrich was diagnosed with Juvenile Myoclonic epilepsy when he was 11. Last year, he received the Jake Cleland Memorial scholarship, presented by Strand Hill. Cleland, a Mira Costa graduate, and best friend of Slater’s older brother Julian, who passed away from epilepsy in 2019, at age 26.
MBee Fest proceeds will benefit a Mira Costa High School scholarship for students with epilepsy. The fundraiser was founded by Heidrich, and his mother Kat Monk in 2018, when Heidrich was a sophomore at Mira Costa. This year’s Tower 12 concert raised $12,000, bringing the total, including previous years’ proceeds, to $50,000.
“What I really liked was the mix of generations. There were all ages coming together and having a good time,” said Annie Seawright-Newton, who donated $500 on behalf of the Hermosa Ironman.
The silent auction included Kings tickets, donated by Kings general manager Rob Blake; BeachLife Ranch tickets from BeachLife founder Allen Sanford; a Hammitt shopping spree from Hammitt CEO Tony Drockton; and Angels tickets. Also contributing to the silent auction were Slay Steak + Fish, Tower 12, Esperanza, Palmilla, Shellback Tavern, Comic Bug, Energy Muse, Marthas, Bottle Inn, Spyder Surf, Birdwell, The Kettle, Lil’ Simmzys, Marcus Med Spa, Mercado and Richmond Bar & Grill.
