Beach Cities Sports: Baseball, kayaking, volleyball and more

Volleyball: Manhattan Beach Surf Volleyball Club will be holding clinics for boys ages 12-18 Tuesday through Thursday Sept. 6-8 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Dana Hills Middle School, 5504 W. 135th St., Hawthorne. Tryouts will be held from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10 at American Martyrs Gym, 624 15th St., Manhattan Beach. Cost for each clinic or tryout is $30. Beach Volleyball: The California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) holds its Cal Cup Championships for men and women this weekend. On Saturday, unrated and A divisions play in Hermosa Beach while Manhattan Beach hosts the Open tournament. Sunday’s action features AA and B competition in Hermosa and four divisions of Coed play in Manhattan. For more information, visit cbva.com.

 

Kayaking: In an effort to bring awareness of tuna overfishing, 47-year-old Andrew G. Szabo, of Manhattan Beach, will embark on an 11-day, 150-mile kayak trip from Manhattan Beach to Tijuana, Mexico. Teaming with Greenpeace’s #ChangeYourTuna campaign, Szabo encourages all those who care about our oceans to join him by kayaks, canoes, SUPs or paddleboards for any length of the trip. Fundraising: The second annual “Row for a Reason” will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9-10 at Body One Fitness, 201 Herondo St. in Redondo Beach. The 24-hour event begins at noon Friday raising funds for Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach (CSCRB). Participants can sign up for a $50 donation for half hour time slots. Baseball: South Bay Refinery Baseball and Softball will be hosting a West Torrance Field Restoration Golf Tournament Thursday, Oct. 27 at Los Verdes Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes. The four-person scramble tournament begins at 1 p.m. with awards dinner to follow. Entry fee of $150 includes: Green fees, cart, tee package putting contest, lunch and dinner. Sponsorship packages are available. Proceeds will be used for equipment, supplies and facility improvements of the former Babe Ruth field located at Entradero Park in Torrance. Triathlon: Registration is open for the Day at the Beach Triathlon to be held at 7 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 16 in Hermosa Beach. The event includes a 1/4 mile ocean swim, 10 mile bike and 3 mile run.
