
Mira Costa capitalized on an 11-run fourth inning to eliminate visiting Los Altos 15-1 in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.
The Bay League champion Mustangs (20-10) will host Golden League champion and fifth-seeded Quartz Hill (22-6) in the second round Tuesday.
Four of the teams ranked in the top ten in Division 3 failed to make it out of the first round.
All games with the exception of the finals are scheduled to start at 3:15 p.m.
Keyon Allen went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored against Los Altos. He slugged a two-run home run in the fourth-inning offensive outburst.
Gordon Cardenas, Kevin Lopez and Garrett Wells each had two-hit games and the Mustang defense played errorless ball behind a trio of pitchers.
Cardenas had another strong late-season performance on the mound. The senior starter scattered four singles with three strikeouts and one walk in four innings of work.
Chris Alcala surrendered one run in two innings of relief and Lopez shutout the Conqueros in the final frame.
Bay League runner-up West Torrance (18-12) was eliminated with a 3-0 loss at Diamond Bar, but Peninsula, the Bay League’s third team, routed No. 8 Carter 9-0.
Peninsula (19-12) will host Westminster (17-10) in the second round. Westminster beat No. 9 Paramount 3-0 in a first-round round victory.
Redondo (16-14-1) was granted an at-large entry but lost its wild-card game 5-3 at Segerstrom.
Second-seeded Serra (25-5) held of West Covina 12-7 and will play at Knight (20-5) on Tuesday.
In Division 7, Vistamar (9-4) defeated host Lee Vining 10-7 and will host No. 6 Cate (14-2) in the second round.
In Division 4, Pioneer League champion South Torrance defeated visiting Estancia 7-2 in the first round on Friday. The Spartans (18-10) will play at No. 8 Northview (22-3) on Tuesday.
Three other Pioneer League teams earned wild-card berths. Runner-up El Segundo beat visiting Chaffey 7-2 in a wild-card game then beat host Granite Hills 5-1 in the first round. The Eagles (19-13) host No. 2 Kaiser (24-3) in the second round.
Torrance (15-13) edged St. Bonaventure 3-2 at home in its wild-card game but fell to No. 4 San Dimas 7-1 on Friday.
North Torrance (16-13) had its season end with a 9-2 loss at La Habra in a wild-card match up.
