Mira Costa enjoyed its third straight 50-point game Friday night but knows it will be in for a tougher battle when the Mustangs host rival Redondo next Friday at 7 p.m. in the regular season finale that will determine the Bay League’s second-place team.

Quarterback David Arredondo threw five touchdown passes and Graham Lipps added three field goals leading Mira Costa to a 53-12 win at Coleman Stadium Friday night handing the Monarchs their third consecutive loss.

Mira Costa (9-1, 3-1) jumped out to a 29-0 halftime lead and the Mustang defense held Morningside to 78 yards while shutting out its opponent in the first half for the second straight week.

Mira Costa has allowed only two first-half touchdowns in the last five contests and has outscored opponents 159-33 in three games since suffering a 9-7 loss at Palos Verdes on Oct. 9.

Palos Verdes (6-3, 4-0) captured its fifth straight Bay League crown Friday afternoon with a 15-7 win over visiting Redondo (7-2, 3-1).

Ranked No. 8 in the CIF-Southern Section Western Division, Palos Verdes will undoubtedly move up as teams jostle for playoff positions heading into the last week of the season. Redondo entered the week ranked No. 2 followed by Mira Costa at No. 4.

Mira Costa will be looking to avenge last year’s 36-21 loss at Redondo and a return to the post season. The Mustangs hold a 17-5-1 edge over the Sea Hawks under head coach Don Morrow.

Mira Costa has outscored opponents 337-118 this season while Redondo holds a 232-132 advantage although the comparison can be misleading. Redondo was credited with a 2-0 win after Peninsula forfeited its final three games. Mira Costa defeated Peninsula 55-13 in what would be the Panther’s final varsity game of the season.
