Mira Costa, Palos Verdes earn high seeds in girls water polo playoffs [UPDATED]

Mira Costa and Palos Verdes shared the Bay League championship with 7-1 records as each team won their home match against the other.

Mira Costa (19-10) earned the No. 3 seed in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 Championships presented by Farmers and routed visiting Rancho Cucamonga 16-3 in the first round Wednesday.

Jordan Raney led the Mustangs with five goals and Emily Milstead added four goals for Jon Reichardt’s squad that will host No. 6 Arroyo Grande (24-7) in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Palos Verdes (18-9) is seeded fourth and defeated visiting Charter Oak in the first round. The Sea Kings host No. 5 Upland (22-8) on Saturday.

Peninsula (16-9), the Bay League’s third representative, entered the postseason ranked No. 7 but fell to No. 9 St. Lucy’s 10-7 on Wednesday.

In Division 6, Chadwick (14-5) is the fourth seed and defeated visiting Cypress 9-4 Thursday. The Dolphins will travel to face No. 5 Palm Desert (12-3) in the wsecond round Saturday.

El Segundo (12-17) was the third team from the Ocean League but lost at Mayfield 7-5 in a wild-card game on Tuesday.

All games leading up to the semifinals are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. The semifinals will be held Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine. The finals are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23 at the same venue.
