Mira Costa hosts annual Mustang Relays track and field competition

More than 20 teams from Southern California will converge at Mira Costa High School for the annual Mustang Relays track and field event to be held Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Mira Costa athletes tuned-up for the Mustang Relays at two events last weekend. Megan Burn placed second in the girls pole vault with a vault of 9 feet, 8 inches while Reed Scale and Sean Griffin who tied for second in the boys pole vault competition with heights of 13-8 at the California Relays held at Cerritos College.

Mira Costa’s 4×1600 relay team featuring JC Ohmstede, Justin McDonald, Niko Pappas and Chance Weston finished second with a time of 18:25.15, Carter Anderson placed third in the 400 and Fa Leilua placed third in the shot put competition with a toss of 37.5 feet.

At the Meet of Champions at Azusa Pacific, Emma Lautanen won the women’s rated mile, Baily Chen won the woman’s 800 and Alexis Johnson captured the women’s 1600 meters championship.

Mira Costa won its first Bay League dual meet against Palos Verdes. The victory followed a dedication of the Bob Fish Memorial Record Holder’s Wall. Working with coaches Robert Calderon and Moe Russell and the boosters, Fish had the record board created. It was one of his last acts before passing away from pancreatic cancer in November.
