Mira Costa claimed at least a tie for first in the Bay Division of the Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League (IBVL) Saturday with wins over Winward and second-place Palos Verdes.

The Mustangs (6-2, 6-0) enter the final week of the regular season with a two-game lead over rival Redondo (6-2, 4-2). Mira Costa will play Palisades Charter at 9 a.m. Saturday before facing Redondo at 11 a.m. All Bay Division games are played at Dockweiler State Beach.

“Our guys are playing solid ball right now but anybody can beat anybody,” Mira Costa coach Scott Davenport said. “I expect another great match with Redondo. We were just a little bit better when we played them two weeks ago.”

Mira Costa’s No. 1 team of Andy Huchel and Roy McFarland held off Redondo’s top team of Logan Glave and Lucas Lossone in the first meeting between the schools. The game of the day featured Mira Costa’s No. 2 team of Tanner Smith and Jackson Wedbush rallying from an 18-16 deficit and staving off game-point at 20-18 to beat Redondo’s Logan Gehman and Sean-Michael Cramer.

“Mira Costa is the team to beat,” Redondo coach Corey Glave said. “The Bay Division is stacked and I’m sure the league champion will come from this division.”

Redondo went undefeated last Saturday defeating Palisades 3-0 and Palos Verdes 2-1, avenging a controversial loss to the Sea Kings earlier in the season.

Lossone/Glave and Gehman/Cramer both went undefeated assuring the Sea Hawks at least a tie for second place. Mira Costa, Redondo and Palos Verdes (5-3, 3-3) are guaranteed to make the playoffs which begin Thursday, Oct. 9 at Dockweiler.

Palos Verdes plays Winward at 10 a.m. and Palisades at 12 p.m.

Between the regular season and the playoffs, the IBVL will hold its Pairs Championship On Saturday, Oct. 4 beginning at 9 a.m. at Dockweiler.

Redondo’s JV-1 team also went undefeated Saturday beating Palos Verdes 2-1 and Mira Costa 2-1. Both Palos Verde and Redondo went into that match undefeated on the season. Redondo JV-1 remains unbeaten on the season and in first place in the Bay Division.

Playing in the South Division in Huntington Beach Redondo’s JV-2 squad started the day with a 2-1 win over Saddleback Valley, but then fell to San Clemente 1-2.  Ian Pizzuti/Jake Ernst were undefeated on the day. However, with the win, San Clemente won the JV-South Division and Redondo JV-2 took second.
